NS Madhavan
N. S. Madhavan writes fiction in Malayalam, the language of the India’s southern-most province of Kerala. His first short story won a prestigious literary prize and was published in 1970. Since then he has published five collections of short-fiction, a collection of plays and a novel. Malayalam Manorama, the Malayalam daily with the highest circulation, chose the novel, Lanthanbatheriyile Luthiniyakal (Litanies of Dutch Battery) as ‘Book of the Year’ in 2004. Among the literary prizes he has won is the Kerala Sahitya Akademi (The School of Letters) award for the best story collection, Higuita in 1995. In 2005 Litanies of Dutch Battery also won the same award in the novel category. Media personality Sashi Kumar made one of his stories into a Hindi film, Kaya Taran. The English translation of his novel was selected to the long list of inaugural Man Asia Literary Prize in 2007.
